Hanoi Man Loses Over VND 3.5 Billion in Online Escort Scam

Hanoi, Vietnam – A 30-year-old man from Hanoi’s Ha Dong District has reported to police after being scammed out of more than VND 3.5 billion (approximately US$134,800) while searching for escort services on Telegram.

According to the police, the incident occurred on April 29. The man accessed Telegram to view adult content and later joined a group that claimed to offer call girl services. Members of the group told him he needed to deposit money to activate a membership card and receive commissions.

Believing the promises, the man followed their instructions and transferred over VND 3.5 billion. However, he was unable to withdraw any of the promised commissions. When the scammers told him he had to complete additional tasks to get his money back, he realized it was a scam and reported the case to the authorities.

Police have warned the public against joining online forums or groups that involve explicit content or illegal activities. They advised people not to engage in any financial transactions with strangers online, especially when promised high returns or investment opportunities that seem too good to be true.

Authorities also stressed that money should only be transferred when the recipient’s identity is clear. People should never send money to strangers, even if they claim to represent government agencies such as the police, courts, or banks.

Police further advised the public to avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading apps from unknown sources, as these can lead to fraud or cyberattacks.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
