Bidhannagar police have arrested two suspects in connection with the cases from Baguiati and New Town. No arrests have been made yet in the Haridevpur case.
In New Town, Helena Sengupta lost around ₹2.3 crore to an investment scam. She had started investing in schemes that promised high returns. When she realised she had been cheated, she filed a complaint at the New Town police station. Police identified a suspect, Shyamsundar Jha, and arrested him from Ranchi. He was brought to Kolkata on transit remand.
In the second case, Poulomi Biswas from Krishnapur in Baguiati was threatened with “digital arrest” and told that her name had come up in a parcel scam. She was forced to transfer ₹1.96 crore in three instalments. Police arrested Umesh Meena from Alwar in Rajasthan in connection with the fraud.
The third case was reported from Haridevpur, where a 51-year-old woman lost ₹1.4 crore. She had been looking for online investment options and was added to a social media group posing as representatives of a reputed wealth management firm. The group members encouraged her to invest through a fake online trading portal.
According to police, the woman made more than 20 transactions and received fake documents with the SEBI logo to make the scheme look genuine. Initially, the website showed profits, but when she tried to withdraw her money, her account was blocked. She then filed a complaint with Kolkata Police.
Officers investigating the Haridevpur case said they are tracking several mobile numbers linked to the fraud. No arrests have been made so far.
The police have urged citizens to remain cautious and verify the authenticity of online investment schemes before sharing personal or financial details.
