A spokesperson for West Lothian Council confirmed that contingency plans are in place to keep all schools open. Despite the cyber incident, schools— including those holding SQA examinations—will continue to operate as normal this week.
“There is no evidence that any personal or sensitive data has been accessed at this stage,” the council said. “There is also no indication that the council's corporate or public access networks have been affected.”
Ransomware is a type of malicious software that locks access to systems or data, usually by encrypting files, and demands a ransom to restore access. It is considered a serious cyber threat by the National Cyber Security Centre and is often used by criminal groups for extortion.
A criminal investigation is ongoing, with West Lothian Council working closely with Police Scotland and the Scottish Government.
West Lothian has 13 secondary schools, 69 primary schools, and 61 nurseries. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
