Cyber Attack on UK Co-op Affects Channel Islands Store Supplies, But Data Remains Safe

Some Co-op stores in the Channel Islands are experiencing low product availability following a cyber attack on the UK Co-operative Group’s IT systems.

While the disruption is affecting deliveries and stock levels in Guernsey and Jersey, officials have confirmed that no customer or member data in the Channel Islands has been compromised.

Mark Cox, CEO of the Channel Islands Co-operative Society (CI Coop), said, “Our stores are looking a bit short of product, but we are confident we’ll be back to normal as quickly as we can.”

Hackers reportedly infiltrated the UK Co-op Group’s IT network and claimed to have stolen the personal data of more than 20 million people. However, the UK group confirmed that it does not store the personal data of Channel Islands members, and CI Coop assured that local systems remain secure.

“We want to reassure local members that the incident in the UK has not impacted the security of our systems or personal data,” Cox added.

CI Coop stated that new security measures have been introduced to protect its systems, but these have temporarily affected operations and delivery schedules. Staff are working around the clock to reduce disruption.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to our members and customers,” a CI Coop spokesperson said.

The UK Co-op operates over 2,500 supermarkets and employs around 70,000 people across its businesses, including funeral services and insurance.

Efforts are ongoing to restore normal supply levels in the Channel Islands.
