The company told news agency AFP that it is investigating a “potential security breach.” This comes after cybersecurity firm HackManac reported that a hacker, who goes by the name “Dedale,” leaked a sample of one million customer records online. The leaked data includes names, ID numbers, and phone numbers.
The hacker claims to have accessed up to 22 million records, although it’s still unclear how many people are actually affected.
Early reports suggest that the leaked information belongs to Movistar Peru customers. The incident follows Telefonica’s recent sale of its Peruvian branch in April, part of the company’s move to cut debt and focus on its main markets — Spain, Germany, the UK, and Brazil.
Authorities and cybersecurity experts are now working to determine the full extent of the breach and how the data may have been accessed. Telefonica has not yet confirmed whether the leaked information is real but says it is treating the situation with urgency.
