The accused have been identified as Akash Sopan Surve and Harshad Laxman Parab, both serving as police constables (sipais) in the Cyber Crime Unit, Thane. The third accused is Mohammad Sohel Rajput, a resident of Thane.
According to police officials, credible information was received on May 3 about the involvement of the two policemen in the illegal sale of mobile phone data. It was found that they had misused their official access to steal CDR and SDR data and sold it to Rajput for personal profit.
Following an internal inquiry, a senior police officer suspended both constables on May 5. An FIR was then registered against all three under Sections 303(2), 314, and 316(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Sections 46, 66, and 72 of the Information Technology Act.
The Crime Branch Unit 1 of Thane Police arrested the three accused on May 5 and presented them in court. The court has remanded them to police custody for further investigation.
Police officials stated that the investigation is ongoing and further details will be revealed as the case progresses.
