In a serious cyber attack on Friday, hackers breached the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) website and stole critical data, according to top intelligence sources.
The hackers reportedly gained access to and deleted several important databases. These may have included citizen data such as Aadhaar numbers, property records, tax details, infrastructure plans, and official administrative documents.
Authorities have launched an investigation, and cybersecurity teams are working to restore the website and recover the lost data.
Intelligence officials suspect the attack is part of a broader pattern of cyber operations backed by Pakistan. “Such attacks are often aimed at disrupting administrative systems, especially in sensitive areas like Jammu and Kashmir,” a senior source said.
A day before the JMC attack, hacker groups linked to Pakistan — including ‘Cyber Group HOAX1337’ and ‘National Cyber Crew’ — attempted to breach other Indian websites. However, these attempts were successfully blocked by Indian cybersecurity agencies.
Recently, hackers also tried to deface the websites of Army Public School Nagrota and Sunjuwan with offensive messages referencing the Pahalgam terror attack. Another website that provides healthcare information for ex-servicemen was also defaced.
Security experts say that Pakistan-based hackers have often targeted websites related to children, veterans, and other vulnerable groups to spread fear and confusion.
Authorities have increased monitoring of sensitive government websites and are taking steps to strengthen cybersecurity measures across the region.
