Gujarat Online Gaming Scam: Minors Tricked Through Fake Apps, ₹2 Crore Recovered

Gujarat, India – A major online gaming scam targeting children and teenagers has been uncovered by the Gujarat CID. Cybercriminals used fake gaming apps and social media ads to lure young users into a fraudulent scheme that stole personal data and money, defrauding victims across India of nearly ₹2 crore.

Scam Operated Through Instagram Ads

According to authorities, the scammers used Instagram to run advertisements offering free gaming coins and gifts. These ads were mainly aimed at minors who frequently engage in online gaming. Once interested users clicked the links, they were directed to download a fake gaming app that looked authentic but was designed to deceive.

After installing the app, users were asked to purchase gaming coins to continue playing. However, the coins had no real value. The actual goal was to gain access to users’ personal information and financial details.

Threats and Intimidation

The scam didn’t end with financial loss. After users made purchases, the scammers began calling the victims and threatening them with legal consequences for using what they falsely claimed was an unauthorized app. Fearing legal trouble, many victims sent more money to the fraudsters.

CID Action and Arrests

The Gujarat Crime Investigation Department (CID) conducted a thorough investigation and arrested seven individuals involved in the scam. Officials also recovered ₹2 crore during the operation. However, the probe is ongoing as the fraud network appears to be active in multiple states.

Safety Tips for Parents

With online gaming scams on the rise, especially targeting children and teenagers, authorities urge parents and guardians to take the following precautions:

• Download apps only from trusted sources such as the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

• Avoid clicking on links from ads or messages promising free in-game rewards.

• Educate children about the dangers of sharing personal or financial information online.

• Use parental controls to monitor app downloads and in-app purchases.

• Report suspicious activity to the nearest police station or cybercrime authorities.

Authorities continue to warn that cybercriminals are increasingly targeting vulnerable groups through online platforms. Vigilance and digital awareness are key to preventing such scams.
