The scam was exposed when officials from the port company filed a complaint on Tuesday. The ad was quickly removed, and the phone number linked to it has since been switched off.
According to the fake advertisement, there were job openings in three shifts of eight hours each, with an option to work two shifts a day. It promised a salary of Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000 per shift and asked for applications from people aged 20 to 45.
However, those who contacted the number were told they had to pay Rs 1 lakh as a “donation” to labour unions. The scammers also claimed that the recruitment was being handled by top-level authorities and that no local political leaders were involved.
Vizhinjam Port officials confirmed that the job ad was fake and warned the public not to trust such offers. Police are now investigating the phone number used in the scam and checking if anyone has been cheated.
Authorities are urging job seekers to verify job ads through official sources and avoid making any payments for job offers.
