Cyberattack Disrupts City of Abilene Operations; Investigation Ongoing

Abilene, Texas — The City of Abilene recently experienced a cyberattack that disrupted several internal communication systems and server operations. The incident occurred a few weeks ago and is currently under investigation by city officials.

Following the attack, the city invoked Texas Government Code Section 552.2325, which allows for the temporary suspension of the Public Information Act in the event of a catastrophe affecting governmental operations. This legal measure was taken as the attack compromised multiple internal servers, making it difficult to maintain normal communication and data access.

Although the full extent of the attack is still being determined, officials stated that the situation has been brought under control and city operations are now functioning at an operational level. The ongoing investigation aims to understand the nature and scope of the cyberattack.

In response to the incident, the city has installed new servers equipped with enhanced security features to prevent similar attacks in the future.

Abilene is not the only Texas city to face such cyber threats in recent times, highlighting a growing concern over cybersecurity risks targeting local governments.

Officials assured residents that they are committed to restoring full functionality and strengthening systems to better protect public data and services.
