Nearly Half of Flemish Companies Faced Cyber Attacks in 2024: Report

Nearly half of all companies in Flanders experienced a cyber attack last year, according to the latest annual cybersecurity report commissioned by the Flemish government. The report shows that 45.8 per cent of businesses were targeted, highlighting the growing threat of cybercrime in the region.

Flemish Minister-President Matthias Diependaele said the findings underline the urgent need for strong cybersecurity measures. “This underlines the urgent need for robust security in an increasingly digital world,” he stated.

The report links the rise in cyber attacks to the growing digitalisation of businesses. More and more companies are using digital tools like e-commerce, social media, artificial intelligence, and electronic invoicing. While these tools help companies grow, they also make them more vulnerable to cyber threats.

Among the companies affected, one in ten suffered successful attacks. In some cases, hackers stole sensitive or commercial data. In others, they demanded ransom payments.

Although 71 per cent of companies believe their cybersecurity is strong, the report found that many still have weak procedures and outdated protections.

However, the situation is improving. Half of the companies spent more on cybersecurity in 2024 compared to the previous year, and the other half maintained their budgets. In addition, participation in government-supported cybersecurity improvement programmes increased sharply, with over 200 companies joining in 2024 — four times more than in 2023.

“Cybersecurity is no longer an afterthought,” said Diependaele. “It is essential for the continuity, image, and competitiveness of our Flemish companies.” He stressed that a digitally advanced Flanders must also be a "cyber resilient Flanders."

The report sends a clear message: businesses must take cybersecurity seriously to protect their future in the digital world.
